As the largest annual fireworks show in all of North America, Thunder Over Louisville is one of the most anticipated events in Kentucky. It is typically held two weeks before Derby Day and is known as the unofficial kick-off to Kentucky Derby festivities.

The History of Thunder Over Louisville

Believe it or not, Thunder Over Louisville did not start off as a fireworks show! When the concept first sprang forward in 1988, it was held as a festival workshop and considered a sort of "opening ceremony" of sorts for the Derby itself. It wasn't until 1990 when the first nighttime fireworks display took place at Cardinal Stadium, and the name "Thunder Over Louisville" was coined.

Since then, the event has grown in size and scope year after year—and many area businesses within viewing range of the fireworks will even host rooftop parties and other special events. In 2007, it was estimated that there were more than 850,000 people in attendance, resulting in a record crowd that has not been broken since! The fireworks display itself usually lasts for around 30 minutes, and coverage of the event can be viewed on local television stations (or online) by those who aren't able to attend in-person.
