The 144th running of the Kentucky Derby is just around the corner, and the Louisville area is beginning to buzz with excitement over this world-renowned event. At the Derby itself and across many area parties and celebrations, people will be donning their wide-brimmed hats and preparing for a weekend of excitement. And of course, one of the best parts about celebrating Derby weekend in Louisville? The signature drinks!

The Mint Julep

Since 1938, the Mint Julep has been known as the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, and it's estimated that more than 120,000 Mint Juleps are enjoyed by Derby patrons each year. And while it used to be made with rum and brandy, today's signature Mint Julep is made with Kentucky bourbon, mint simple syrup, and crushed ice. Traditionally, it is also garnished with fresh mint and served in a silver Julep cup.

The Old Fashioned

For those who prefer something a little less minty, the Old Fashioned is another signature Derby drink that celebrates the flavors of Kentucky Bourbon. In fact, to make it, all you need to do is pour two ounces of your favorite bourbon into a rocks glass with about half an ounce of old fashioned syrup. Garnish with an orange peel for a citrus twist!

The Bloody Mary

The Derby is the perfect excuse to do a little early morning drinking, and there is no better before-noon cocktail than the Bloody Mary. For a spicy rendition of this signature Derby drink, combine tomato juice, vodka, lemon juice, celery salt, and Tabasco sauce. Garnish with your choice of green onion, pickles, asparagus, and celery!

These are just a few of the most popular Derby drinks to enjoy this year. And of course, the Fillies & Stallions Derby Eve Party is the best place to enjoy them and hang out with celebrities! Check out our website to learn more.
